2007 Garden

Designer:  Lisa Swanson, Zinnia Design: 781 749-8734

In case you were wondering, I’m the one on the left. For over three decades, I taught kindergarten. I was right at home with Mickey and his friends in Disneyworld. He was happy to pose and brought out my inner child.

I recently moved into a new house and had to leave my beloved garden behind. I knew I didn’t have the strength to plant another one. I missed the serenity it brought to my life. I would never have asked for help before I was diagnosed. But cancer has given me courage. When I read about Hope in Bloom, I decided to call. I am so glad I did.

On a gorgeous warm fall day an army of volunteers arrived at my house. Within a matter of hours, my deck and back yard were filled with texture and color. These generous people gave me a gift I will always treasure.

My garden is my sanctuary. Nothing can beat the joy and wonder it brings to my soul. It is the best medicine in the world. I sit outside in my big purple chair and enjoy every moment. The wildlife outside my house has provided me with countless hours or entertainment. I watch the birds choose a seed from the feeder and take a dip in the birdbath. I laugh at the squirrels playing tag and admire the butterflies flitting from flower to flower. In return I decided to give the animals a gift. The day I shaved my hair, I set my locks in the garden for all to weave into their nests.

The garden has helped me cope with this insidious disease and given me more reason to continue to fight. It has also brought me new friends. Thank you all.
